Google AI Overviews: what they mean for small businesses

Google now answers many searches with an AI summary above the normal results. What AI Overviews are, how they change who gets clicks, and five ways to be the business they cite.

Search Google for something like "how to start a catering business" or "best time to visit Obudu", and you will often see a block of text at the very top, written by AI, before any normal result. That is an AI Overview.

For small businesses, it changes the rules a little. Here is what it is, what it means for your traffic, and what to do about it.

What an AI Overview is

An AI Overview is a short summary Google writes for some searches using its Gemini AI. It pulls from several web pages, writes an answer in plain sentences, and shows links to the pages it used, either inside the text or alongside it.

It does not appear for every search. You are more likely to see one for questions ("how", "what", "why", "is it worth") and comparisons than for a simple business name or "near me" search, where the map results usually lead.

What changes for your business

Fewer clicks on some searches. When the answer is right there at the top, some people read it and stop. Pages that used to get clicks for simple questions may see fewer.

But the businesses it cites get noticed. The pages linked in the overview sit above everything else on the page. Being one of those sources can be worth more than ranking fourth in the normal list.

Quality and clarity matter more. The overview needs facts it can quote. Pages that answer a question clearly, in plain words, near the top, are easier to use than pages that bury the answer under a long introduction.

Your traffic numbers may move without anything breaking. If clicks drop on a few informational pages while sales are steady, AI Overviews may be the reason. It is worth checking before you change your whole site.

Five ways to be the business it cites

  1. Answer questions directly. For each main service, write the answer to the top three customer questions in the first two or three sentences of a section. Then add detail.
  2. Use headings that match the question. "How much does event catering cost in Abuja?" as a heading, with the answer straight after it.
  3. Add your business details code. Hidden code that tells Google your name, address, hours, products and questions-and-answers. Check what your page has with the free business details checker.
  4. Be specific. Prices or price ranges, areas served, delivery times, what's included. Vague pages are hard to quote.
  5. Keep the basics strong. AI Overviews tend to draw on pages that already rank and are trusted. A fast, well-linked site with good reviews still matters. The free site audit shows where you stand.

How to know if you are being cited

You can search your key questions on Google and look, but overviews vary by person, place and day, and they change over time.

Paladzo AI Visibility checks Google AI Overviews along with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot for the questions you choose, on a schedule. It saves each answer with the businesses it names and the sources it cites, so you can see when you start (or stop) being the business Google quotes. The page grader in Fix & Grow also shows whether Google displays an AI Overview for the search you are grading.
